Video of the Month
Each month we’ll feature a new video made by a Paul Mitchell Future Professional. To be considered for Video of the Month, post your video on YouTube and send the link to George Morales.
Please note: We will not post videos that contain unauthorized copyrighted material or music.
This month’s video was conceived by Future Professional Gabrielle Hennessey, photographed by staff member Paloma Dean-St. Germain (both from Paul Mitchell The School – Virginia), and produced by Paloma and her husband, James Dean (Xplicitly Graphic).
“I made this video for two reasons,” Gabrielle says. “The first was ignorance, and the second was Winn Claybaugh, dean and cofounder of Paul Mitchell Schools. Coming from a place of love, kindness, and motivation, he has helped to break the industry stereotypes and should be recognized and respected for doing so.”
“The Paul Mitchell culture and schools are changing the way hairstylists are viewed,” Paloma adds. “For years, the industry has been stereotyped as a place for high school dropouts, ditzy women, and homosexual men. It’s been seen as a job, not a career. Thanks to Winn Claybaugh, we have been given a chance to break these stereotypes and build a culture and community of people who come from all different backgrounds."
Previous Videos of the Month
Last month’s video comes from Paul Mitchell The School – Salt Lake City. Their winning entry in the recent “It’s Groovy to Be Green” contest earned them a day of education with a Paul Mitchell Artistic Director.
After assisting in various salons for three years, 33-year-old Michael Snider knew he wanted a life in hairstyling. He graduates from Paul Mitchell The School – Santa Barbara in August 2009 and hopes to find his dream job at a Paul Mitchell salon. His video shows what he can do and where he wants to go. He even wrote the music: a song about life behind the chair and being thankful for your mentors. Inspired by the movie The Secret, Michael says, "Whatever I think and present is going to happen. I created this video to show people that I’m willing to be that good."
Last month’s video comes from Mai Hammond of Paul Mitchell The School – Orlando, class of 2009. After spending years in a Vietnamese concentration camp, Mai’s father built a small boat and escaped to Malaysia with three-month-old Mai and their family of eight. Sponsored by an Oklahoma family, they came to America where Mai grew up, became class valedictorian, graduated from college with a 4.0 average, and spent several years working in sales and marketing before following her heart and entering cosmetology school.
May’s video comes from Seth Willis of the Ohio Academy – A Paul Mitchell Partner School in Columbus, Ohio.
"As I got out of Core, I started looking at Beacon, NAHA, and things like that," Seth says. "I wanted to bring a cinematic feel to a video résumé and make it interesting even for someone who didn’t know anything about hair." Drawing inspiration from some favorite movies (Seven, Requiem for a Dream, Sin City, Sweeney Todd), Seth worked with Wellcan Media to produce his video, which includes a classic cut and a funky, edgy style.
